As the temperature drops, the wax naturally found in diesel fuel begins to form crystals. The point at which wax crystals form is known as the cloud point. These wax crystals eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel or prevent it from starting. While low quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40 degrees F (4 degrees C), most fuels have a cloud point near 32°F (0°C). The point at which the wax crystals clog the fuel filter is known as the cold filter-plugging point (CFPP). How to Be an Environmentally Conscious Motorist

1. Practice safe extended drain intervals. 3,000 mile oil changes are a thing of the past, and using AMSOIL synthetic oils will protect your engine, increase performance and reduce the amount of waste oil produced. Be sure, also, that the oil change facility you use recycles used oil regularly and legally.
2. Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires should be inflated to the pressure recommended for your vehicle (this information can either be found inside the door frame or in the owner's manual). For every 3 pounds tires are below recommended pressure, fuel economy goes down by about 1 percent. Tires can lose about 1 pound of pressure in a month, so be sure to check the air pressure regularly, especially before carrying heavy loads or taking long trips. Underinflated tires can also detract from handling and safety, and can shorten the life of the tires.
3. Don't forget about your engine's air filter. A high quality air filter, like AMSOIL Ea Air Filters, can, if properly maintained, increase power, prolong engine life and improve fuel economy. Also, air filters with a longer life help the environment by reducing the volume of filters that end up in landfills.
4. Optimize your route. By planning the route in advance, you can save time and gas and reduce the total cost of travel. In addition, route optimization reduces overall CO2 and other emissions your vehicle emits.
5. Use a fuel additive that is good for you, and for Mother Nature. Conventional lubricants are refined from crude oil which has thousands of types of molecules. Refining is a process of physically separating the impurities from the oil and further separating the light and heavy components. Because refining separates products by weight, it groups molecules of similar weight and dissimilar structure. The result is a lubricant with a wide assortment of molecules. Some of the substances in crude oil are detrimental to lubrication. Paraffin's, for example, are a common conventional oil contaminant that causes motor oil to thicken in cold temperatures.

Synthetic motor oils are made from pure chemicals, not refined crude. Their components are chemically reacted to produce finished products with pre-designed performance characteristics. Because of their molecular uniformity, they excel in reducing friction, which improves fuel efficiency, controls heat and reduces wear. This molecular uniformity also helps synthetics resist thinning in hot temperatures and thickening in cold.

Driven by increasingly stringent emission and fuel economy standards, Toyota has informed its dealers that the company will begin requiring SAE 0W-20 synthetic motor oils in new Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles over the next several years. Other OEMs are expected to follow suit by 2011. Among the benefits cited by Toyota are enhanced protection at high and low temperatures, improved fuel economy and reduced engine deposits. In addition, Toyota is reportedly studying increasing oil drain interval recommendations to 10,000 miles.
